Gallery: Creating The Ominous with Lomography XR Redscale
2 12With Halloween right around the corner, it's the perfect time to take a look at some creative Redscale shots from our community. Redscale is a popular experimental technique where the “wrong” side of the film is exposed to light first which results in a red or orange cast being dominant in the photos. To achieve this, photographers would previously have to DIY their own film through respooling and inverting the film, but nowadays you can simply buy our Lomography XR Redscale film in order to achieve this look. In line with the eerie season right around the corner let's see how this film stock can create an ominous atmosphere with every shot.
Beyond Box Speed
What's fun about Redscale is you can control and play around with how intense the effect can be on your photos. With our version of the Redscale film, it can be used between ISO 50-200. If you're looking to get a much more red and darker experience try shooting it at ISO 200 and see how each picture can be a still in your favorite horror film. For a lighter yet still eerie feeling overexposing the film while developing it at ISO 200 will give you a range of lighter red to orange tint. Knowing how to control exposure well with this film will allow you to unlock the film's potential, especially when creating shots perfect for bringing out a dark character.
Red Tint in Nature
One of the best places to shoot Redscale is in nature. Though nature is often calm and relaxing, one shot using the Redscale film stock can turn this tranquil spot upside down. The reds and blacks of the film stock tend to consume every color in sight and create a warped version of each scene. Lush greens and calm blue waters soon shift into something more sinister and even if you're shooting in bright daylight, each photo transforms into something disturbing.
Alternative Reality
Beyond nature, you can see how this film stock can alter reality. Whether you're casually shooting street scenes, capturing places filled with history and art, or even cute portraits, somehow the Redscale film can really bring out the ominous in the everyday.
