Outdoor Adventures: Bouldering on Black and White Film With @Eslava

Bouldering has been becoming more and more popular in recent years, and with the edition of Sport Climbing to the Olympic Games its a sport that is still fast on the rise for young people! Bouldering is similar to rock climbing, one can start at their local climbing gym before venturing out to try the world’s natural rocks and formations. Lomographer @Eslava went on a trip with his friends and shows us firsthand the sport of outdoor bouldering through the lens of his Nikon FM and a few rolls of black and white film.

Starting as training for mountain climbing, bouldering has quickly risen to become one of the most popular adventure sports. It centers on the use of core strength, with just a few tools such as climbing shoes for grip, chalk to keep your hands dry, and bouldering mats to prevent injuries from falling.

Unlike other forms of free climbing, with bouldering you scale natural and man-made “problems” – the term the sport uses for what you’re going to climb. Problems in bouldering usually are at most six meters (20 ft) tall and have rating systems that use the V-scale which helps climbers know the difficulty level of each route.

For those who are lucky to live near nature, outdoor bouldering is interesting in the sense that the problems that you’ll be tackling are based entirely on the natural formation of the boulder. Besides Colorado, other places that are famous for bouldering include Albarracín in Spain, Oukaïmeden in Morocco, Khon Kaen in Thailand, and Fontainebleau in France.

In his album simply entitled "Bouldering, Mexico", @Eslava mixes shots of landscapes with action photos of his friends taking on different bouldering problems. His choice of film adds to the atmosphere and overall mood. Fuji Acros 100 was great at capturing them during the daytime but as the day got darker switching to Ilford 800 was a great choice for low light situations and action shots because of its faster speed. As we always encourage in Lomography to bring your camera everywhere, it's great to see more outdoor activities such as bouldering captured on film!
