Discovering Two Sides of New York With Newcomer @UPTWN_FILM

Lomography newcomer Lawrence (a.k.a @UPTWN_FILM) was gifted his first film camera, a Yashica EZ Dual 35, several years ago. But it’s only recently that he’s picked it up and taken the plunge into analogue photography.

I dusted [the camera] off to take portraits of some college friends. I’ve been shooting film for about 4 months now.

In these four months Lawrence has already captured some stunning images. His photos display an eclectic mix of intimate portraits, street photography, cityscapes, and everyday moments snapped around New York City. They are filled with a sense of energy and urban activity.

He has tried both color negative and black and white film with fantastic results, and we may be biased, but we think his most striking images have been captured on our LomoChrome Purple 35 mm and LomoChrome Metropolis 35 mm.

I’d say the LomoChrome Purple has this unique feel to it that brings me back to early Fall. I like seeing the deep greens turn purple/pink during film development.
I was also surprised to see the amount of grain that comes out in the Metropolis film. It makes buildings and ripples in waves look extra crisp and textured.
At the moment, my favorite photos are in the LomoChrome Metropolis album on my LomoHome. I was able to capture a beautiful moment of a young person reading on a hammock in Harlem.

Through Lawrence’s lens these color-shifting films are like two sides of the same coin. The grittiness and muted tones of LomoChrome Metropolis is perfectly suited to the concrete jungle of New York. While LomoChrome Purple shows the city as a more magical and romantic version of itself, especially with the low light reflecting pink hues on the surface of the Hudson River. Together they create an emotive effect of a spectrum of realities being lived in the city.

Lawrence is just getting started on his film photography journey, and we can’t wait to see where it takes him next.
