Hi, Rachel! What do you do and what got you started with photography?

Hi! I am currently working from home during the pandemic with my feline co-workers. My interest in photography probably got started when I got a plastic camera as a Christmas present one year as a kid. I’ve owned some type of camera ever since. I am not artistic at all but photography allows me to scratch my creative itch by capturing art in the real world, which could be anything, in my own way.

How did you discover Lomography and what made you join our analogue community?

I discovered Lomography around 2009 or so while searching on the internet for cameras and such. I was immediately on board with the philosophy here: f**k the rules, and the Lomography community is so welcoming, inspirational, and encouraging. I am continuously in awe of the photos people have taken.

Who are your favorite photographers here?

I enjoy everyone’s photos but check out @lislisdotnet, @llcooldawe, @frenchyfyl, @gabyo, @krismas, @lucascoomans etc.

What is your favorite subject to photograph?

I have no preference on subject; whatever I see where I think “I want to take a picture of that” is my favorite subject to photograph. But if we’re going off quantity alone, I have thousands of pictures of sunsets and cats.

What do you usually look for in a scene before you hit the shutter?

At the risk of sounding like a lame-o, I don’t look for anything when I am shooting a photo. The scene always presents itself. Photos are everywhere. Things tend to be art without trying to be.

In this day and age, why choose film?

Delayed gratification keeps you regular.

What does a perfect day look like for you?

Today, I drove around in the fog and the rain with the Holga and took pictures, developed the roll at home, watched one of my favorite shows, scanned the negatives, and drank copious amounts of coffee. Currently waiting on a thunderstorm to roll in. That’s a pretty perfect day.

Hi, Usova! What do you do and what got you started with photography?

I am a waiter in a cafe where breakfasts are served at any time of the day and dishes are named after famous people. I started taking pictures at the age of 12-13 with a digital camera of my parents. Later on, I bought myself a Sony NEX5D. I just truly enjoyed taking pictures of everything that surrounded me, mostly nature, streets etc.

I first started taking film photographs in 2014. My first camera was a Canon EOS 10 but the lens was our Industar. :D I knew nothing about film photography and lenses, film, etc. I just accidentally saw how one of my friend's friends was selling his camera on his VKontakte page and I became interested. Don't remember why... The process itself seemed interesting to me. I wanted to know what it's like to photograph on film.

How did you discover Lomography and what made you join our analogue community?

I learned about the concept of Lomography just a couple of years ago and didn't give much importance to it. But I initially liked the idea that a good photo is not the one where all the rules are observed (the horizon is not overwhelmed and well, you get the idea...) I think you can photograph whatever you like and as long as you like what you're doing. So my views coincided with the views of Lomography in some sense. :)

I found this site recently by accident. I notice that the best things are those that you find by chance. :) I like the site interface and the color scale under each photo. I started using it to find photos taken with certain cameras, lenses, and film. And the photos I found surprised me. These are a variety of the most unexpected photos. Each image has its own story and vibe. There are no restrictions on it, you know what I mean? People just take pictures as they like, not trying to please anyone with the "perfect photo".

I was inspired. So I decided to register, knowing that I would be spending a lot of time here. I decided to post my photos at the same time not counting on a response. And the response I received surprised me very much.

Who are your favorite photographers here?

I am still a newbie here, but those whom I noticed and liked a lot are @bluecorals, @francislee, @j_abbott, and @n_u_m_b_f_a_c_e.

What is your favorite subject to photograph? What do you usually look for in a scene before you hit the shutter?

It's not something specific. I want to learn to pay attention to detail and take interesting pictures that tell a story or carry an idea or a certain mood. The main thing is that the photograph must not be empty. I still learning it.

In this day and age, why choose film?

For the same reason that many choose film - frame value. And you always have a chance of happy accidents :) Like I have those all the time! One time my FED broke and I had to rewind the tape myself. As a result, there were scratches on the film that gave beautiful sparklines in the photographs.

I got a "veil" effect on my frames on my last roll and I don't quite understand why :D Maybe because this film was traveling with me to a place where it was like 32 degrees, maybe airport scanners do some stuff too and the soot layer was poorly washed off, I dunno. But the result pleasantly surprised me. And I am always happy when I can capture the moment and mood so I can watch these photographs later and remember how it was. :)

What does a perfect day look like for you?

Summer. A day with a person who loves you. A day free from worries.
