A Retrospective of Larry Fink's Parties and Social Situations

In light of a pandemic in 2020 and with social distancing becoming a new normal, the New Year will welcome a retrospective showcase on the photographs of American photographer Larry Fink in "Larry Fink: Retrospective" at the Galerie Bene Taschen in Cologne, 27 January 2021.

The gallery will feature his series such as The Vanities, Social Graces, The Beats, Somewhere There's Music and Boxing Images. In Larry Fink's photography, it's always the people being the core of his imagery. HIs series The Vanities document the Hollywood celebrities of the time at parties, with Fink being the silent spectator. Social Graces documented Fink's attendances and sights in art openings, galas, and private receptions.

Fink was involved among a circle of creatives when he was 17 – writers, painters, musicians – all who desired a more liberal society. These people are featured in Fink's series The Beats. Surrounded by jazz while growing up, Fink also started on the series Somewhere There's Music, which gave memorabilia to Fink's encounters with jazz legends such as John Coltrane and Jimmy Rushing.

Fink photographed boxers as well behind the scenes, conveying their ambition, passion, and discipline outside of the ring. What makes Fink's photography so unique is how he imbues details that clue in the viewers about the social landscape during those times. Shot in black and white as he uses chiaroscuro, these documentary life shots become art themselves.
