(NSFW) "Unmanned" Exhibition by Sebastian Buzzalino and Rebecca White

Calgary artists, Sebastian Buzzalino and Rebecca White, want to distort the male gaze and subvert sexualized views of the body with a nude photo series, called Unmanned, which opens to the public at a pop-up event on November 1 at the Divine Dream Factory. The exhibit will be displayed for one night only and feature live performances from Mark Mills and Sunglaciers.

A collaboration between Buzzalino (photographer) and White (art director), Unmanned features 15 men from the Calgary music scene, including 36? frontman Taylor Cochrane, indie-pop one-man band Mark Mills, Sunglaciers vocalist-guitarist Evan Resnik, Mason Jenkins (The Corey Hotline), Sean Hamilton (Miesha & the Spanks), CC Codpiece (DRI HIEV), Arron Crooks (The Northern Coast), and more.

Working with performers, the artists explain, was an important part of the project. “Most of the models in the series are used to having an audience, and by shooting them nude we’re creating another level of vulnerability.” said Buzzalino, whose work was recently featured in Exposure Festival's Emerging Photographers Showcase. “But this project is not about inverting the male gaze. It’s about distorting it so much that the binary no longer exists.”

One photo of a muscular, tattooed Mason Jenkins captures the transgender musician posed playfully while injecting himself with hormones. “Hormone therapy is part of my own masculine journey, so I saved my shot for the day of the photo shoot.” said Jenkins. “I’ve been told my whole life that my body is no good, and I don’t see representations of my body in art. The more visible trans bodies become, the more society will recognize the beauty of transgender people. We need to be included in art because the world is missing out by not seeing us.”

Another photo of a blue-haired Taylor Cochrane shows the artist staring seductively into the camera as he eats green ramen, while Deon Louie-Henry wearing purple-framed glasses and a military hat sits curiously in front of a pink backdrop. Elsewhere, Evan Resnik poses outdoors with a bright flash of light and his own vulnerability reflecting into the lens. Transgressive, absurd, prying, intimate—with each image, a different perspective of masculinity and the naked form is revealed.

“Women are far more often the subjects when we talk about the nude throughout history—in sculpture, painting, photography,” said Rebecca White. “We wanted to use the male body, be it cis male or trans male, as our subjects for this series, and to put their bodies into positions or settings that begged the question: ‘What makes a nude sexual?’ while also highlighting the varied beauty of the male form.”

Unmanned opens on November 1 at the Divine Dream Factory (720 17 Avenue SW). Tickets are $8 at the door.
