Kevin Meredith: How the New Lomogon Art Lens is Renewing Classic Optics

Lomographer Kevin Meredith a.k.a. lomokev has been a long-time photographer, a writer and a teacher based in Brighton, United Kingdom. Having gotten his first Lomo LC-A in 1998, he's been shooting with the classic Soviet camera and has been carrying one whenever, wherever he goes ever since.

So, when we asked him to test out the Lomogon 2.5/32 Art Lens, the lens that was inspired from the LC-A's aesthetics and optics, the first thing Kevin discovered was how the lens recreated the LC-A's results.

Kevin tested out the lens with the Brighton swimming club, a huge part of his life and career as a photographer. Kevin tried out all the styles, but he was more keen on the portrait style that the Lomogon 2.5/32 Art Lens will offer. Another noteworthy thing he's noticed is the perfect circle aperture.

“The aperture is great because when I first saw the aperture ring I was like, 'Oh, that's kind of cool', because obviously if you have a traditional aperture system with blades, that is expensive, it is mechanical. But, because the aperture ring you've got – it means the aperture is a perfect circle, which means your bokeh is going to be really, really nice. It is really cool to just not have to worry about it!”

He also took note of the levels, contrasts, saturation, vibrance, and clarity of the images made with the Lomogon 2.5/32 Art Lens. As a lover of the Petzval 85 Art Lens and an advocate of the analogue routine, the Lomogon 2.5/32 Art Lens only furthered his passion for film photography and the Lomographic movement.

“It's a perfect marriage between the old and the new. You got this old essentially a bit of technology that you could have made probably 100 years ago, this lens, the Lomogon, but then you’re using something very 21st century like Kickstarter to get people interested in it. Yes, it's cool stuff. I can’t imagine any of the other big brands coming out with something as this – to most people when I show them this lens they're like, 'Wow that's crazy!' I mean, they [big brands] can do it but I can't imagine it! They can, but they just probably wouldn’t. They don't need to because Lomography is doing it.”

For Kevin, the future is indeed analogue with the Lomogon.
