A new exhibition just opened up and it features the work of internationally acclaimed photographer and director Mike Miller. He is known for his iconic photographs that helped put West Coast hip-hop on the map. His famous subjects include Eazy E, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur. The exhibition titled California Love started last September 8 and will run up to November 3, 2018 at the M+B Photo gallery in Los Angeles, California. This is Miller’s first show with M+B Photo.
California Love is an ode to this turning point in Miller’s life and career. The California native found himself in the middle of a cultural and musical upheaval in the 90s and his images were his ticket to becoming a moving force in music and portrait photography. It is only fitting to have his work displayed at a gallery exhibit in the heart of Hollywood, after all, this is where it all began. Miller’s work isn’t just a portfolio filled with images of famous artists, it’s also a documentation of a rare period in West Coast hip-hop history. The rise of groups like the NWA, artists like Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg defined the hip-hop scene today.
Aside from his early photographs of the budding hip-hop scene in the 90s, Miller’s various photographs of his home state are also included in the show. This powerful series is his take on the culture, scene, and changing times that contributed to the rise of West Coast rap. Interested viewers may contact M+B Photo for their schedule.
