“Around the World in Analogue” is your bite-size guide to the most amazing travel destinations around the globe, as told by the members of the Lomography community. Today, Lomographer Dominik Tomczyk (@tomczykd) hits the streets of Shoreditch — London's center of eye-catching murals and graffiti.
I've been going back and forth to London for every February to attend a yearly business conference. Every visit, I devote one afternoon to visit a special district in East London: Shoreditch. It's probably one of the most amazing places in the capital of the United Kingdom with its vibrant streets lined with colorful street art, galleries, and markets. It's ever-changing and never boring.
This year, I went to Shoreditch with an analogue camera, my beloved Pentax 645N, for the first time. I love this district! I love to walk the streets to discover new graffiti and new street artists from London’s East End and the United Kingdom as well as international artists from all over the world.
For many, graffiti is associated with hooligans and vandalism. For me, it is the art of the modern city and Shoreditch is the confirmation of that! Graffiti as a street art adds a unique character to the city. These are not any daubs that damage the elevations of buildings, but an art form that decorates London tenement houses.
And here's the best Shoreditch's streets to see graffiti: Angie Quinn, Rivington Street, Great Eastern Street, Cremer Street, Princelet Street, Toynbee Street, Shoreditch High Street, Heneage Street, Fashion Street, Brick Lane, Bell Lane. If you are in London, please visit the Shoreditch district! Step into a world of color and street art!
Thank you, Dominik, for putting the well-deserved spotlight on the gritty, graffiti-filled streets of Shoreditch!
Dominik used a Pentax 645N and Kodak Portra 160VC to capture these vibrant murals and artworks. To see more of his work, visit his LomoHome.
