Brick by Brick - LEGO Hasselblad Camera by Helen Sham

We’re always on the lookout for interesting finds and this one caught our eye right off the bat. Taiwan-based designer, photographer, and certified LEGO enthusiast Helen Sham made a Hasselblad 503CX camera with over 1,000 LEGO pieces and that’s not even the best bit about it. Helen’s LEGO camera works just like the real deal, complete with camera functions and a working glass lens.

Helen’s LEGO camera is an inspired piece born out of love for creating and photography. Design-wise, her LEGO Hasselblad has working features like the film back complete with film spool and counter, a glass lens paired with a viewfinder you can actually peer through to see your subject, and a spring-loaded shutter button to give you a tactile feel — it looks and feels like a fully-working Hasselblad camera.

The camera can be found at the LEGO Ideas site — a place where builders can pitch their designs in hopes of having them built by LEGO as toy kits. It’s a neat crowdsourcing platform where LEGO fans can vote for their favorite pieces. Helen’s LEGO Hasselblad already has over a thousand supporters at the time of writing, still a long way from her goal of having her design manufactured by LEGO but the support for her design continues to pour.

Helen also posted a video on her YouTube channel wherein she demonstrates the individual working parts of the camera. It’s easy to see that she really put great effort into the design and building phase of her film camera project — the parts work smoothly and blend well together in their yellow and black color scheme.

You can show your support for Helen’s design by registering on the LEGO Ideas site. Who knows, it might just get approved for production and arrive at toy stores soon.
