Gowland is known as America’s No. 1 Pin-Up Photographer for having shot more than 1000 magazine covers in America, including glamour shots for Rolling Stone, Playboy and Modern Photography. His pin-up portraits majorly influenced the image of the young and beautiful American woman, mostly depicted in a swimsuit, sun-kissed at a beach backdrop. His subjects included Ann-Margret, Joey Heatherton, Yvette Mimieux, Julie Newmar, Rhonda Fleming, Deborah Kerr, Joan Collins and Raquel Welch.

In today’s society, his distinguished images are subject to discussion about the fine line between eroticism and art as his portrayal of women can be controversial.

His accomplishment in photography isn’t only because of his pictures. He also invented premium cameras and equipment meant for his use, such as the Gowlandflex twin-lens camera in the 1950’s, which used 4 x 5 film. The camera is known to be used by photographers Annie Leibovitz and Yousuf Karsh as well. Gowland also wrote books about pin-up photography, including “How to Photograph Women” (1953) and “Figure Photography” (1954).
