The contemporary German artist Astrid Klein is mostly known for her mixed medium work, ranging from painting, collage photography, and installation. A true experimental artist, Klein is one of the few distinguished female artists in the world.
It was in 1978 when Klein came to the limelight. Considered as a pioneer of experimental, large-format photography meshed with images from newspapers, prints, and magazines. She referred to this images as "photoworks", a distinction from mere photographs, and the technique resulted in transformed darkroom-processed images. as she questions the accuracy of photography as a documentary medium while centralizing the theme of human tragedy.
Collages are important to her work, highly influenced by the French New Wave and the genre of the photo-novel, Klein continues to tackle political issues and women issues in society. See more of her hybrid works in Astrid Klein at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, running through September 2.
