Aurélien Valette has been at the head of communication and events production for the French photography festival Les Rencontres d'Arles for 12 years now. He honored us by accepting to be one of the judges of our TEN AND ONE AWARDS. Today, he tells us about what he likes about photography and tells us a bit more about what inspires him.
Bonjour Aurélien, Please introduce yourself to our readers.
I've studied philosophy and I'm a graduated in Photography of the École Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière in Paris. I've been in charged of communication and events at Rencontres d'Arles Festival since 2005, it's the first international photography festival.
How did your interest with photography start?
When I was a kid, I was amazed by the dark room, by the magical emergence of the image under the red safelight.
How would you define photography?
I'm always "impressed" that a photography is a on object where time and space are condensed in a simple surface in two dimensions. I am still fascinated by the time of the shooting added to the one of latent image and then to the time of viewer.
What inspires you?
A vinyl with a book and a good glass of wine.
Who are your favourite photographers?
Those who have not yet discovered.
What's your fondest photographic memory?
The family photo album.
What makes a good photograph?
It's impossible to answer to that question. There is not only one photography, photography is multifaceted and global. A good image is unique, it can be documentary, vernacular, artistic. There are no rules... A framing, a light, clearly, a good editing, a subject, a narrative, a feeling, an experimentation, a description, an information…
Merci Aurélien ! We look forward to discover the photos you will pick as a judge for our competitions.
The forthcoming edition of the Rencontres d'Arles Festival will be held from July 2 to September 23, for more info check the festival's website.
