Newcomer of the Week: Michela Piccoli (@greena)

Music and visual art intertwine in the moody photographs of Italy-based Lomographer Michela Piccoli. Most of her photographs are inspired by and named after a song she's fond of. Dive into the creative process of our featured community newcomer in this interview.

Name: Michela Piccoli
LomoHome: @greena
Location: Lanciano, Abruzzo, Italy.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

Hi everyone, my name is Michela and I'm an art historian. I got into photography a few years ago. I've been studying and practicing it ever since. Over the years, I developed a channel of communication based on visuals to describe what I feel and live everyday. Through colors, black and white, and atmospheres I try to capture my feelings, whether or not details and reference points exist, while telling a story about my order, my peace, and my chaos. I constantly try to take pictures. I think of photography as a sort of travel journal made of details, lights, places, people, and details recalling one another. Kind of a memo on feelings and impressions.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I only recently discovered the community, and I found it to be inspirational, as it is a place where to discuss and exchange ideas with other excellent photographers. There are also analogue photographs, a dream come true!

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

For the ten golden rules! I always, and forever will follow the following:

  • 1. Always bring your camera along with you
  • 10. Don't care about the rules

In this digital age, why still film?

Film has a unique attraction to me. It's a kind of photography that needs to be planned and imagined. There is the waiting for development, the curiosity to see the finished work. All of these aspects contribute to make film almost magic.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

These days I am working with two cameras: a Minolta XM with 17mm, 1:4 lenses that produce the right image distortion; a Hasselblad that I basically use for portraits; an Olympus XMA that I always carry in my purse; a Polaroid 600, gift of two dear friends of mine, with which I am befriending as the time goes by.

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

I'd like to have a Lomo'Instant Wide and I'll certainly get one soon.

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

What a big question! Music is essential. I love to combine music and photography, and I often use titles of songs to name my photos.
As I am typing these answers, I am listening to Mogwai. I love Pixies, Morphine, Sonic Youth, David Bowie.

Books: I really liked Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me by Javier Marías. I read Palahniuk, Miller, Céline, artists' journals...I could write an endless list.

A movie that really struck me? Perhaps Old Boy.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

When I took this picture, I was feeling exactly like this sea, and not by chance I was listening to "Follow the Waves" by Melissa Auf Der Maur.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

@yulia_adamova. She really has something special.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I expect to get to know new photographers and continuously exchange ideas with and be inspired by them.

Thank you Michela for sharing your thoughts with us! Welcome to the Lomography Community and we're looking forward to seeing more of your work!
