David LaChapelle: Bedazzling Psychedelia (NSFW)

2017-11-08 2

The American photographer David LaChapelle often borrows styles and aesthetics from art history, making him stand out as a commercial photographer. His new series "New World" welcomes us to his hyper-realism.

He is best known for his fashion editorial and commercial portraits, but his new series "New World" is where LaChapelle returns to the analogue process as he focuses on portraits that reminisce creation myth and paradise, representing nature, joy, and soul. Many of the scenes are painted in a surrealistic way with his wild pigment palette, inspired by Symbolist painters such as Odilon Redon and William Blake, through hand-painted photography.

All set in the tropics, jungles, and forests, the retro-futuristic style distracts his viewers from the imminent dangers and seriousness.

Learn more about the display in David LaChapelle: New World at the Maruani Mercier Gallery in Brussels.
