Where: Lomography Gallery Store Soho
When: Friday, July 28th 6-9pm

Roland “Charlie” Phillips was born in Jamaica in 1944, he moved to the UK in 1956. After acquiring his first camera in the 1950’s Phillips began to document life in London. He is best known for his photographs of Notting Hill at a time when the area was racked with poverty and the notorious landlord Peter Rachman was exploiting local tenants. He documented many aspects of urban life in an area that was seeing significant changes.

Later, he became a freelance photographer and had his work featured in magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Stern. It was his “Notting Hill In the Sixties” exhibition in 1991 that saw him gain some notoriety and interest. Since this show his work has been exhibited at galleries such as V&A Museum, Tate Britain, Museum of London and the Museum of the City of New York. His body of work stands as an outstanding archive of culturally resonant photographic imagery.

Time Out London referred to him as "..the greatest London photographer you've never heard of — and some of his best works are only just being discovered.."
