Seeing the Chinese Urban with Marilyn Mugot

In the 21st century, cultural traveling doesn't get any better than flying to mainland China. For the most part, the long sovereign state in East Asia remains deeply rooted in its traditions and practices. Considering it's one of the earliest civilizations founded in the Yellow River, China is a remarkable place to be. One will see that its provincial areas continue to have that 'traditional' feel.

But head to the cities, it's a dichotomous world. French photographer Marilyn Mugot's long night strolls around China paid off with these dramatic street scenes of the Red Dragon's urban areas.

Marilyn Mugot surveyed Chongqing, Guilin, and Hong Kong, some of the most populous and urbanized areas. The places reek of its duality in identity -- both as locations part of the civilization birthed at 2070 B.C.E. and as fully modernized cities.

The night urban landscapes are colored in neon. Marilyn explained to Lomography Magazine that the aesthetic befits the duality of the cities. In her nocturnal endeavors, she discovered that overcrowding among families and inhabitants are practically natural, and while China may not have the picturesque streets, the anachronism of both urban and traditional landmarks make interesting subjects in photography.
