Being surrounded by creative people encouraged lomographer Qixian Zhu to pick up a film camera and start documenting her daily routine. Being in the community allows her to let loose and enjoy the fun of shooting the analogue way. Get to know our community newcomer from Shanghai, China in this interview.
Name: Qixian Zhu
Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.
My name is Qixian Zhu from Shanghai, China. I'm now working in a game studio. Due to my working environment, I work with a group of young friends who love art so I got familiar with a film camera.
How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?
I have to mention my friend, Kelvin (@kelvin_wx), who is a game designer and has been very popular in the community. He introduced this community to me and explains that it is the biggest community for film photographers. When I finally join, I’m so surprised by what I see -- there are so many excellent and fantastic photos here.
As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?
I like Rule #10: Don’t worry about any rules. After studying how to use a film camera, I am a little bit worried about operational errors and was afraid of making mistakes in composition. But then, I figured that I don’t need to be so anxious. I can take photos of what I want. If I choose to record what I appreciate, I will have confidence in my photos and touch others hearts. My gut feeling tells me I just need to enjoy the fun of film.
In this digital age, why still film?
Film is warm and full of surprises. But it can also exceed your expectations. I feel very excited when I get new rolls of film and hope to know what the ending is. I like to capture unpredictable pictures using film cameras. This is something that you wouldn’t get with a digital camera.
Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?
So far, I am still a new photographer and have used only one analog camera, an LC-wide. I started to learn the camera by using the one lent to me by a friend. I take this camera when I traveled to Mauritius and Hokkaido. One of the photos I took in Hokkaido won Photo of the Day. I feel so excited and greatly encouraged by this.
What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?
This is difficult for me to decide for I am still little confused as a newbie. I think I need to learn more about this. I find a lot of people recommend Lomo LC-A so it may be a good choice.
Any song, book, or movie you live by?
“Welcome To The Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance. It’s the song full of power to raise me up every time once I listen to it. WE WILL CARRY ON!
Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?
Certainly, I admire my friend Kelvin’s works. He specialized in capturing amazing details. I think he has a pair of lovely eyes that can find beauty.
Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?
I’m still searching the people that I appreciate. I have seen many great images here that I have never seen before.
What are you looking forward to in our Community?
I want to improve my photography skills and make new friends with people around the globe. There are lots of cool people in this community, I hope to take the same fantastic pictures as them one day.
Thank you Qixian Zhu for sharing you thoughts with us! Welcome to the community and we're looking forward to seeing more of your work!
