Semana Santa sa Pampanga

As a young “kapampangan” (the term used for people residing in Pampanga), I take pride in the richness of our culture and heritage.

During the holy week or the Lenten season, a tradition of sacrifice is done by penitents all across town. Penitents do some acts of chastisement among themselves that they believe is a way to renew themselves and bring back their lives in accordance to God’s providence. Such acts like carrying huge crosses (like what Jesus did), flagellations, and even crucifixion have caught the attention of the people and the media from across the globe! In fact, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, CNN, and Discovery Channel to name a few, have visited the Philippines during the holy week just to witness the event.

A gruesome act or a sacrifice? Some may think of it as horrendous but for us “kapampangans”, it is an expression of repentance. What to shoot? Take your camera and capture the penitents in their utmost glory of sacrifice. Ilfords and Slides do wonder with colors! Just don’t forget to keep a distance or you’ll end up bathing in blood!
