Lubitel 2

Often unappreciated and unfairly dismissed as lesser TLR, the Lubitel 2 is an underdog by reputation, but offers a great platform to get into the world of Twin Reflex Cameras.

The Straight forward controls and affordability is always a plus to the curious but stingy lomographer.

Given the relatively inexpensive and straightforward controls of the camera. Lubitel means “Amateur” and this medium format sweetie might not yield the sharpest of images, but will surely delight those who fancy soft focused images. Subjects of your photographic desires all but glow when you use slide films. Its aperture can be set between 4.5 to 22 Ranging from a 1/15th -1/250th speed as well as a Bulb setting the Lubitel 2 offers a reasonable level of control for both the beginner and the experienced user.

Manufactured by GOMZ from the mid 50’s to the mid 70’s this little gem also has a self- timer function for those rare moments that the lomographer wants to be included in the shot. This feature also helps for a steady slow exposure when night time comes. If you feel a bit awkward lugging around the leather case just chuck it as the camera’s bakelite body can take a beating when necessary. After all it is made out of the same material that are used in toilet seats. The Lubitel 2 uses a circular ground glass spot for focusing, the little magnifying glass offers little help when focusing because of its diminutive size. Also the inverted left right viewing needs a bit of getting used to.

1. When still learning how to rock your camera, set it at f22 to minimize focusing errors and give you a reasonable depth of field.

2. But if you really wanna learn sacrifice your first roll and experiment with different settings.

3. Love the timer. Use it to camwhore or just include yourself in the frame of a group shot. When the timer gets stuck, nudge it forward and then cock it again to reset the count.

4. An old rewind crank, a strip of black electrical tape, a couple of rubber bands and a small piece of foam = 35mm madness

I just got one of these babies, my dad mentioned that he had a little camera that he bought for his foundation art year in 1978, and said he never used it for anything other than that year so i could have it if i could work it. Of course i worked it out, and have just shot my first film with it, am waiting on results, its B+W film. Am gonna put a colour one in today. They are awesome fun to use - i haven't seen my personal results yet - but have seen some shots my dad did. Pretty bloomin cool.

I really want to try the 35mm, that looks lush. Any more tips?
