Five Minute Density
On View August 27 through September 9
Opening Reception August 27, 6 p.m.
After exposure, a series of chemical reactions creates an instant print, with full density in just five minutes. Using Fuji Instax integral instant film, five different artists explore the five methods of perception. One of the most tangible mediums of photography, these little prints transition from ephemera to something indelible, a graphic and tangible expression of the artists vision.
Join us at the Lomography Gallery Store New York on Thursday, August 27 for the exhibition opening of Five Minute Density. Come meet the five artists who use Instax as medium. Curated by Noé Arteaga. Enjoy some refreshments and a live performance by James Tillman.
Marta Freedman, @H0tgirlseatingpizza
Freedman began the @H0tgirlseatingpizza project last spring after a personal experience brought her to find solace in comfort food. Having experimented with a Diana Mini before, Freedman began to take self-portraits using Instax and her project took off. Using social media as the main delivery platform of her analog work, Freedman recently picked up the new Lomo’Instant camera to document the “behind the scenes,” of @H0tgirlseatingpizza. Freedman’s project reflects the themes of current and pop culture, and her “behind the scenes” images exclusively on view in this show give viewers an insight into just how much goes into a single “post.”
Hans Hendley, Hendley Perfumes
Hendley has been making analog photographs for over 15 years. Making photography his primary tool for exploring and understanding his surroundings, he uses the medium as a way to make sense of the bewilderment of the world. Hendley finds Instant film an interesting vehicle for his photography because, while a tangible result is produced instantly, it’s a one-off, a unique object that can never be duplicated in the same way as other photographic mediums. Having founded Hendley Perfumes in 2014, Hans now explores the world of olfactics in the same manner as his photos: always precise, always intricate, combining several elements to create a mysterious yet harmonious work of art.
Mutia Taufieq, designer
Indonesian-bred and Toronto-based, Taufieq is an avid music festival hopper with a predilection for instant film who has recently adopted the Lomo’Instant for use with the medium. When not knitting together her favorite collage of instant shots, the communications student can be found at her dance studio or dreaming about Morocco.
James Tillman, singer & songwriter
James Tillman is a singer-songwriter, producer and photographer from Washington, DC. With influences ranging from Nick Drake and Marvin Gaye to Stereolab and Marcos Valle, Tillman’s sound carries the spirit of soul, alternative and psychedelic music. During his travels, James uses the Lomo’Instant to capture candid snapshots wherever he finds himself, providing a firsthand look into an artist’s life on the road.
Ciara Vesely, fine art photographer
Vesely is a photographer and artist who was raised in the mountainous town of New Paltz in Upstate New York.
Now based in Brooklyn, Vesely is recent graduate of the Pratt Institute’s highly esteemed Photography Program. For “Five Minute Density,” Vesely uses the Lomo’Instant camera to capture scenes of live music and nature, the two environments where she feels most at home.
