What We've Been Working on in the Last Few Weeks

Our new website is now about 2 months old. After rolling out the most important features in the beginning, we have now been fine tuning them and working on the overall performance of the website. Taking a step back, we now want to ask what you think about it!

If you’ve been to the website recently, you’ve probably noticed that we’ve added some of the most-requested features, in addition to smoothing out a few small glitches here and there to make everything faster and easier:

  • The email notifications and reports are back
  • Photos by users which are embedded in an article or note are now linked – just click on the little chain icon on the bottom left corner of the photo to leave a comment, like the photo or maybe even follow the user
  • If you still use RSS readers (we do), there is now an atom feed of our Magazine
  • Reporting photos or comments can now be done with a simple click, which then notifies us so we can take a closer look
  • Photos taken by newcomers have been added to the overview page of Homes
  • We’ve also spent quite a bit of time working on the performance of the site and it should now load way faster (especially the images)

Aside from the most obvious feature, the LomoWalls (which we are currently working on), we are now wondering if there is anything you are still missing. Please let us know your feedback in the comments! Thanks.

HI. Everything looks good and better. I'm happy to see the improvements that are being done constantly. The new site is easier to navigate now. My only thing right now is with the "feed". I think it might be better to get news about the new albums from friends rather than scroll through all the photos. Sometimes someone uploads 30++ photos at once and it is a bit taxing scrolling down the feed. The old site had the news about new albums posted and that's what I look for (aside from notifications) whenever I check the site. Overall though, great job!!! the site looks awesome.

I love the new site! The heart-shaped and immediate like function is great, and I enjoy the new clean look and the bigger pictures. Thank you very much for the amazing work! It is greatly appreciated!
Questions: I have been wondering is how and when the trending photos change. So far, my trending photos have been the same ever since the launch.

  3. u-t-e
    u-t-e ·

Also, the notification sound scares me because it very much sounds like my anti-virus program and the sound it makes when it has found a virus. But I assume that's just me ...

  4. recurving
    recurving ·

@u-t-e: trending is a combination of time and popularity. If you upload some new photos today and they get some likes they will most surpass all your currently trending photos. So in short: the "younger" a photo is the less likes is takes for it to become trending opposed to "older" photos.

i am pretty happy with the page in general. anyway i am - as said several times before - missing bookmarks for pictures.
besides that the performance on my ipad2 and using the coast browser is sometimes poor. the browser breaks down and for example if i like a picture it happens that the heart doesn't turn red so it looks like if i did not click the button.
i do really appreciate the effort you put in there: you did a pretty good job. thumbs up.

@bloomchen I'm not sure what you mean with the bookmarks for photos? If you like photos they are collected in your photo likes for example. Or do you mean a more general bookmarking?

The new site is great, the bigger photos are neat and getting used to the new layaut was relatively painless too. But maybe (just maybe) after getting the lomowalls back up you could look into bringing back the "mini movie" function for animating oktomat/actionsampler photos. While it's no biggie if thats not possible, I kinda liked playing around with it. Thanks!

  14. kasta72

Yes the new site is much better, i likae the design But i agree with #grazie - it would be nice to see the albums again in the feed. Also for organizing my photos, adding keywords and descriptions, it would be better to do it for all the album, exactly as before. And one terrible feature for me - scrolling up the photo i am watching actually is shortcut to go back to overwiev of the album - always make me angry there is no logic in that :)

The new site is wonderful. I still think the top banner should un-dock and follow the scrolling. In the competition section, bringing back a list of ongoing competitions would be nice. Keep up the great work guys.

Good afternoon, I wasn't too impressed initially but once all the features had been reinstated it became easy to pick up. The only things I've missed are the camera shelf, completion status (for geo-tagging, exif etc) achievements and lomowalls. One thing I'd really like is to have a quick home link in top navigation bar to view your OWN home not just the global homes page, rather than having to go to the dashboard or even if you made the dashboard flash enabled with a drop down it would be nice. Would speed viewing your images a lot quicker especially on a mobile device and desktop :)

It took me a while to get used to the new site, but I am very happy with it - especially after i realized that new photos of friends were listed in the Feed section. I love that it shows all the photos so you can easily brows through and "heart" the ones you like immediately without having to go through all the extra clicks to open an album up. Also, i love the heart button. I think that was actually my suggestion!!?? Can I take credit for that? LOL - I'm sure many others also thought of it. I haven't really explored articles and tipsters yet, but I hope to soon. Hopefully creating articles will be easier too.

the new site looks good and the upload is MUCH better. i'd still like the gacility to rotate a photo in Edit as a lot of 120 scans come back sideways or upside down (depending on camera) and it's a faff to import them into iphoto, rotate and export again - that's the only thing i'd change. cheers!

  29. tasjarhodes
    tasjarhodes ·

I still like the old site more, but I'm getting used to this now, so it's not that bad (I didn't try the Uploader yet, though). I would like to add some suggestions and ask about some of the old features:
    - Could you add the Random LomoHome button again? I liked that option.
    - Can we see the time when notification is received (like in comments and shouts), not only the date?
    - Old Feed view...
    - Showing the date when the photo was taken (like before).
    - More detailed LomoHomes (again like before: age, city, country... maybe even the date when we joined the site?).
    - Also, a question about LomoWalls: Are we gonna get a more detailed LomoWall building? Having options like rotate and crop photos, being able to move photos around more freely and make photos overlap each other would be cool. So building LomoWalls would be more like making a collage, rather than just filling in some rectangles.
I still don't understand what's with the round profile pictures... Just for the aesthetics? Because most of the photos are rectangular, so they are being cropped awfully.

  30. zoe191
    zoe191 ·

I am getting used to the new site. I think it's cool. Maybe I just haven't figured it out yet, but I don't see how I can zoom in when viewing a Spinner photo. Previously there was some kind of super viewer (I forgot what it's called) and then you could see a larger pic but you would have to scroll sideways because it's a long photo. I also want to have an easier way for visitors to navigate a home. Previously there were thumbnails of album covers that you could click to open albums. Now, you have to scroll all the way to the bottom and click a page number to see other albums.

  31. clickiemcpete
    clickiemcpete ·

I agree with Grazie. I don't want to wade through every new photo in my feed. There are people that I might want to view an album sometimes but not every time so don't want to see every new image from them...also, would be really nice if I am viewing a new album if I could click like and next without having to scroll down which is very annoying and time consuming. I find I am spending far less time on the site now because frankly it is very cumbersome to simply view each image in a given album. That said, there are some very nice things such as the larger images. I realize it is very difficult to do all this and I appreciate the work that has gone into it. Hopeful that it will all be optimized in the end.

Other than that, I find everything about the new site wonderful. @clickiemcpete says that he found himself spending more time on the old site. I find the exact opposite happening to me. This is mainly due to how GREAT the new site works on my cell phone and tablets. I LOVE the new look and the quickness of photo uploading. Many of the new features are fantastic! I do miss a couple things though. Mainly what happened to the dates in our albums? They're gone. I always enjoy knowing when a certain photo was taken especially for those of us who've been here for years. I also would like to be able to upload photos from the past and arrange where I'd like them to go (mainly towards the back of my other more recent albums). It seems we are unable currently to rearrange album location. I also miss being able to click on a photo and immediately being able to select that photo to enter into a competition. Now if we want to enter a competition we have to go searching for our photos which sometimes is difficult to find.

You guys have made massive improvements since launching the new site, and for that I'm really grateful. My requests to make it even better:
    - Make it simpler to create albums, e.g. by making it possible to edit photos directly on the Uploader page. Currently, on the 'Edit selection' page, you don't even get a thumbnail of the image(s) you're editing, which makes it harder to think of a title and/or description.
    - Bring back the date and time of day tags.
    - Include Notes on the Homes overview page. (I haven't read any since the relaunch because they're so hard to find!)
    - Bring back the camera shelf (and make it so we can list ALL our cameras this time, please).
    - Seeing a list of my recent activity is useful, but it used to be possible to easily track the activity of others simply by visiting their Home page. I liked that a lot, because it helped me to see whether they'd posted a new album, blog, article, movie, etc., and also what photos and other content they'd liked or commented on, which introduced me to content I might not otherwise have seen.

That's it for now. Will be back if I think of anything else. Thanks for considering my requests, and keep up the great work so far...! :)

I am very happy with the site in general. There are some minor things missing like more information in the homes and I think the Photo / Album Edit could be overhauled at some point to make it more intuitive but everything is working fine and the site is very fun to use so it's easy to forget these "flaws". I discoverd lots of new lomographers to follow and rediscovered many old photos of those I already knew. At first I also wished the feed would show albums but I remember that I often didn't visit albums, when I didn't feel like it. Now that we see the photos in the feed, I see and like many photos that I would have missed if I had to open the album intentionally. I don't think I need Lomowalls back. It feels like they don't fit to the new concept, but I'm ready to be corrected on that. I would have said the same about the shoutbox a few months earlier, and now it has become one of the strongest and most fun features of the website. Thanks to the team. You're doing a great job creating something that we can enjoy everyday.

Don't know if it was already suggested but I think itw (like the #people) should appear in the feed when it is sbd we follow, as notes or articles written by them
But anyway, the new website is really functional, fast and clear so keep up the good work :)

Having trouble with the uploader. Portrait style photos upload in landscape for some reason.

What would be terrific is to integrate with other stuff, for example Flickr, but even better would be to have a plug-in for Adobe Lightroom - that would be a dream.
