Our Newcomer of the Week is a music student from New York with a passion for fashion and film photography. Meet the talented and stylish Apneet Kaur!
Name: Apneet Kaur
Location: Brooklyn, New York City
Please tell us something about yourself.
I’m a music student and I study flute. I have a pug named Chapeau and I enjoy reading Gay Talese and Henry Miller. I like exploring new places and listening to 40’s Jazz records.
How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?
I’ve been using different Lomo cameras for the past few years. I finally joined the Community after poking around. It seemed to be really fun. In fact, it inspired me to go shoot more on film lately.
As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?
I think rule #1 is the one I apply most. I always take at least one camera with me whenever I go someplace new. I also love using film shots for my blog, Who is Apneet, so having a camera with me at all times is a must.
In this digital age, why still film?
I grew up on film because my dad photographed our family with his Nikons. Film also has a charming quality when printed unlike printing digital shots.
I also love the “wildcard” factor of shooting film. You’ll never know what may turn up. I bought a film camera from a thrift store and developed the roll of film that was in it. The first half were family photos from a holiday which appeared to have been taken during the 90’s.
Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why is this your favorite?
My favorite camera changes from time to time, I get bored easily when using the same effects. Sometimes, I prefer an off-brand, dollar store disposable camera. Other times, I use my Lomography Fisheye because it’s the first Lomo camera I’ve owned.
What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?
I got to try out the Petzval Lens at the Lomography Store a couple weeks ago. I definitely think it would be a unique addition to my lens collection. It not only takes beautiful images but it looks absolutely majestic.
Any song or movie you live by?
I’ve always loved “Thirteen” by Big Star.
Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why is this your favorite?
I really like this BW shot my emilysoto because it’s simply beautiful.
Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?
I’m still quite new here and I’m continually inspired by many folks that make up the rich Lomo Community.
What are you looking forward to in our Community?
There are so many new images posted every day, it’s an endless source of inspiration!
