Weapon of Choice: Canon AE-1 Program

Why is the Canon AE-1 Program your Weapon of Choice?

The Canon AE-1 Program is my Weapon of Choice because of the sound it makes when I fire the shutter, its weight and feel when I hold it in my hands, the sharpness of its photos, and its easy controls.

Any memorable experiences you’ve had while using this camera?

When I was still learning how it works, I decided to put a black & white film in it. I thought I set it correctly but I didn’t realize that I was shooting a empty camera the whole time. I was really looking forward to seeing the beautifully contrasted photos of landscapes and people I took. When I rewinded the film, I felt it was loose and I realized immediately that the film hadn’t been correctly loaded the whole time. I was really disappointed. It was actually a really good lesson because from that point on, I always check if the film is correctly set before shooting and now my Canon has never failed me!

Would you recommend the Canon AE-1 Program to other lomographers? If yes, whom do you have in mind?

I would recommend it to every beginner who are really interested into photography, who want photos with DSLR quality but with an analog touch.

When using this camera, what are you favorite subjects to photograph and why?

I love to take street photographs with it and that includes portrait and landscapes, of course! I really like this camera because I can control the depth of field and create some awesome atmosphere with portraiture and street photography. I don’t like when the image is controlled, set up, or manipulated. I love the unexpectedness that street photography delivers!

Any tips or tricks with using your the Canon AE-1 Program?

To do double exposure, you’ll need to expose your film twice. To do this, first you have to select a film with a ISO that’s not too high. Then, underexpose it twice. So, if you are using an ISO 200 film, you’ll have to expose it twice at ISO 400.

When you have exposed the entire film, rewind it slowly and place it back in the camera with the same placement as before and shoot it again.

A great camera! I have one! However, I prefer my Prakticas for only one reason: I use these East German cameras from more than 20 years and I'm used to their command and to the unusual position of the shutter release button!
