Meet Christopher Logan, Lomography's Special Correspondent for NY Fashion Week

Being a part of Fashion Week is not easy. You need to know high-profile personalities and e-mail tons of guys to be on the Fashion Week A-list. So when Christopher came to Lomography with the idea of being our official Fashion Week correspondent (and after showing us his stunning fashion portfolio), we were very excited to work with him.

Armed with the Petzval Lens, an LC-A camera and a the Lomo’Instant, Christopher documented most of the fashion week shows with Lomography gear. Allow us to introduce you to to this amazing red-haired photographer and show you some of his shots from the week.

Hey Christopher, tell us about yourself.

Well, I was raised by a family of eccentrics in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. I lived there until I was 18, then I moved to South Florida to begin my photography career. I currently spend my time between Bushwick, Brooklyn where I have my studio and Miami Florida. I’m obsessed with going to cultural events in the city. I love going out and experiencing what NYC has to offer, it’s one of the reasons why I moved here. My fashion and personal work is usually inspired my music, films, people, or places. I love telling stories through my work. I tend to play a lot with different color palettes and textures. I love creating atmospheres using motion blur, light, and shadows.

How did you get involved in fashion photography?

After graduating with a degree in photography from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, I moved to South Beach Florida, which then was the epicenter for fashion photography. In the summer I lived in Milan to develop my portfolio and to network with designers and stylists etc. My travels to and from acted as a foundation for my eye and aesthetic. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

What would you say makes your photos special and different from those of other photographers in the industry?

My work lends itself to blending cinematic imagery and the beauty of the everyday and merging them into one single source. My clients come to me for this reason. They love the sense of wonder that exists in the images. For me producing fashion editorials or campaigns that garner this style comes second nature, I absolutely love what I do and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to produce the work I’m known for.

How was your experience with the Petzval Lens?

Where do I begin? This lens is truly something that will shake up the industry. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. Its vintage mechanics and looks are striking and it’s quite the conversation piece. Models, designers, photographers, and admirers approached me about it and once they saw the images that this lens produced they were left in awe. The dreamy bokeh that it produces truly creates an environment that is one of a kind. It’s romantic, alluring, and mysterious. I did not shoot with another lens on my DSLR the entire NY Fashion Week nor did I have any desire to.

Why do you think this lens is good for Fashion Photography?

For me fashion photography is all about storytelling. This lens builds a foundation for editorials and takes it to the next level. I love that effect that it produces internally within the lens.

A lot of my personal work and editorials have dreamy textures that took time to produce to in post production. The Petzval lens has elevated my work and makes it stand out from the crowd. In fashion photography that is something that is essential for longevity and branding purposes. It’s wonderful to have the luxury to create these effects in camera. For me, it’s a staple to have in my camera bag.

What is that you like the most of your job?

I love being able to tell people’s stories or to create ones for them, essentially I’m a storyteller.

You are very well connected in the industry and you shoot for all kinds of outlets. What would you recommend to those who are just starting in fashion photography?

I would not stress out by buying the most expensive gear on the market. You can create beautiful fashion imagery with basic camera gear. Lomography has an array of unique products available to jumpstart your interest in this genre. I would approach modeling agencies, stylists, makeup artists, manicurists, designers, fashion PR firms and approach them to collaborate with you. Elevated talent elevates you. Know your references! Research vintage fashion magazines, movies, music, artists etc. Don’t be afraid to ask who someone is or where to look for something that interests you. Be on top of your social media. Showcase your best work online with appropriate hashtags that will interest clients and lastly stay focused on your style, if you don’t have one yet. Shoot until your gut says “that’s me” and stick to it!

What photo have you not shot yet and still dream of doing?

That’s a tough one, if I had to name just one it would photographing Kylie Minogue.

What was the best picture you shot with this camera durin the week?
