It isn’t among the pioneering examples of found footage film, yet “The Blair Witch Project” remains among the oft-cited, well-made examples of the genre. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, the movie was highly successful for an independent feature as it was not only an international box office hit but also praised both by the viewers and the critics. The movie even made the covers of Newsweek and Time magazines!

By all means fictional, “The Blair Witch Project” was promoted as a “true story.” Supposedly, it shows the recovered footage shot by a group of three student filmmakers who went missing while filming a documentary about the infamous Blair Witch in Burkitsville, Maryland. The filmmakers were never found again, although their equipment and this video were.

Artisan Entertainment released “The Blair Witch Project” on this day in 1999, although it was already shown the previous year at the Sundance Festival. In marketing the film, a viral web-based campaign was employed – something that’s common nowadays but at that time was viewed as groundbreaking. Also, the “true story” shtick was apparently so believable, it even led to people arguing about the movie’s authenticity!

In any case, even though it has already been 15 years, “The Blair Witch Project” continues to send chills down the spines of those who watch it. To cap off this feature, we’ll leave you with one of the most famous scenes from the movie. Spoiler alert!
