One of the most beloved movies from the 1980s, the story of the Robert Zemeckis- and Steven Spielberg-helmed Back to the Future was developed after its co-writer Bob Gale wondered if he and his own father would’ve been friends had they went to high school together. Although all these began in the early ’80s, a series of events that included casting issues and changes to certain details in the story led the movie to be filmed beginning only in early 1985. “Back to the Future” finally made its debut close to three months after filming wrapped up, exactly 29 years to this day.

In a nutshell, “Back to the Future” follows the story of Marty McFly, who gets sent back from 1985 to 1955 through a modified DeLorean DMC-12 where, after meeting his teenage parents, he inadvertently alters his future (well, present) after a series of circumstances. The movie stars young Michael J. Fox as McFly, his most iconic role that has been credited to have launched him into stardom, and Christopher Lloyd as the eccentric Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown, inventor of the DeLorean time machine.

“Back to the Future” was a huge success, praised by critics and the public alike. Not only that, the movie also reaped many awards including an Oscar for Best Sound Effects Editing, a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, and the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film. Since its release, it has figured in several “best of” lists by prominent publications like Empire and The New York Times, as well as the American Film Institute’s list of best films in the science fiction genre. Most importantly, “Back to the Future” was selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry in 2007, deeming it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
