Fresh From the Lab: Take Off Your Socks and Shoes - It's Summertime!

Every year, just a few weeks before summer, I dedicate a series of photos to the joy of living outdoors in this good season. One of the most common pleasures is taking one’s socks and shoes off to feel the first warm rays of sun on our pale feet, which were prisoners inside shoes throughout the long winter season. So, it’s time to take off your socks and shoes and relax barefoot! Where? Of course, on the walls surrounding the beautiful lake! Take a look!

The lake here in Como is a wonderful place to visit. Surrounded by the beautiful Prealps, the water extends in a way that is very similar way to the Norwegian fjords. Como is situated in the north of Italy near the Swiss border, so winter here is longer than in other parts of Italy. From May onwards, the average temperature is above 24°C, allowing nice sunbaths in the little park in the city! So, this is time to throw your socks and shoes into the lake and enjoy a nice sunny afternoon barefoot. Poor feet, they have been imprisoned inside shoes for long time, so this is time to free them from their captivity! What are you waiting for? Take off your shoes and enjoy a beautiful sunny day in total freedom!

These pale feet, so light pink, wanted their first sunbath!

Of course, they wanted to sunbathe in a nice place like here in Viale Geno, with the wonderful cathedral on the background!

Fresh from the lab, these photos were taken in the second and third week of May 2014. Going barefoot is a joy, and also a symbol of freedom!

In taking these photos, I explained my project to the girls so my request was never declined. Just a few words, a smile, and they allowed me to take these photos without problems! Many thanks to all these girls!

I was not in search of “perfect” feet like those of the professional models; I prefer to shoot these photos of ordinary people relaxing on the walls by the lake shore.

All these photos were taken at a close range, mainly with a 105mm lens. The different times of the day affect the tones and the colors of the water, from dark blue to almost black.

I asked to this girl to place her shoes on the wall to make a composition with her feet and her shoes in the foreground, and the nice Villa Geno and the fountain in the background.

On the first photo I focused on her sandals, while in the other two photos, on her soles.

As you may have observed, I have asked the people to change the positions of their legs or their body. I’ve always had full cooperation! If you ask gently and explain your project, you will never have problems. A photo taken with the collaboration of the model is definitely more satisfying than a picture taken secretly! So, take off your shoes and relax!
