Meet My Better Half

2014-06-06

Mother’s day may be over but heck, here’s a tribute post for one of the strongest and most beautiful women I know.

I know, this is a post that is long overdue but bear with me since I got the film processed and scanned only recently. I’ve been thinking about a project for the longest time and it occurred to me, “why the heck am I always looking for inspiration when it’s always been in front of me?” So this will be a bit mushy but hey, there’s no harm in trying.

Meet Monalie, the mother of my son Gab. She takes good care of my little soldier day in and day out. And I’m so thankful for her for doing that and more.

We met in college during our sophomore year and all I can remember is the time we’ve spent together up to now. She taught me more than a few tricks and schooled me in being street smart. She’s clever like that.

Also, she’s a loving daughter to her parents and a caring sister to her siblings. Family is one of her strong suits. She’s just a fierce companion.

Also, one of the things that we like doing together is hunting for great finds – be it clothes, shoes, odds and ends, and even cameras. Matter of fact, she was the one who brought me to one of the secret shops where I bought my used *Konica C35 AF* camera. Again, she’s clever like that. She knows the lay of the land of her hometown and luckily, I get to tag along when she goes out hunting.

This photo project is teeny tiny compared to the bigger, more ambitious projects out there but for me, it’s one of the greatest things I’ve done. Compiling my memories with her and our little one is an achievement. I can’t wait to add more to this work in progress. I just hope she lets me take her pictures more often. She’s kind of camera shy in real life. The only way I got her to smile was because I told her these weren’t going up on the site. She’s quirky like that.

Sorry, honey. Tricked ya.

A Salute to the Masters: Ice Skating (A Tribute to Monte Fresco)

This article is dedicated to one of the finest British sport photographers, Monte Fresco. In his 30 years of reportage for the Daily Mirror, he took some of the most iconic photographs in sporting history. He covered football, tennis, and boxing. But it is his ice skating pictures that I am most fascinated with. Using my own lens, I give him a modern tribute.

Inspiring and Daring Women in Contemporary Photography (Part I)

We love a striking photo as much as the next person, but a unique point of view makes us head straight to a feature. Who should the world know more about? Who has rocked our perception of beauty, sexuality and creativity? These questions populate our notepads, and our list of photographers is quite long. For International Women's Day 2016, we whittle the directory down to our current favorites, photographers who resist labels (even the ones we give them) and dare the world to see what they see.

Lomo In-Depth: The Defining Role of Women Photographers in Art History

It is general knowledge that history—ruled and written by austere patriarchy—has not been so kind to women. Photography is one of the rare exceptions; womankind has set its pervading presence and participation in photography since the birth of the camera in the 1800's. Lomography traces the role of women in photography with a special, comprehensive summary for International Women's Day.

    A Color Remix

It's human nature to be restless and imaginative. The real may be interpreted as what one sees or how one sees something. For the daydreamer, a scene from nature transforms into a canvas. Suddenly a field makes room for chemical coloring, all those anachronistic streaks that somehow look right. Or else, those beautiful colors amplified or subdued to their most pictorial shades. All in the world of trial-and-process film photography.

Long Exposures Around Europe with the Minitar-1 Art Lens

One of the things I like the most about the Minitar-1 Art lens is how sharp the focus can be when you shoot with a small aperture. So if you are one of those that like to shoot at night, get a tripod, add this to a late dark winter afternoon, and you will end up with a bunch of beautiful long exposures. This is what I did on my last trip to Europe.
