Explore: Chiang Mai, Thailand

2014-04-08 1

Those who are yet to visit Chiang Mai, this month would be a perfect time to visit the famous city in northern Thailand! Allow us to show you why in this installment of Explore!

Located 700 kilometers north of Bangkok, the city of Chiang Mai, the capital of the province of the same name, is the biggest and most culturally important city in the northern Thailand. It’s one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations, famous for its nature adventures, hundreds of ornate Buddhist temples called wat, and fascinating festivals.

Among the best known of these festivals held in Chiang Mai is the Songkran Water Festival, Thailand’s traditional New Year’s Day celebration (the city is known for having the biggest and most famous Songkran events) set to happen on April 13 – 15 this year; and Loi Krathong/Yi Peng wherein buoyant decorations called krathong are floated on the river and sky lanterns called khom loi are lit and launched in the air.

Not quite sure why you should head to this Thai city soon? We have a handful of beautiful travel snaps from our fellow lomographers to show you around, and hopefully convince you to visit this fascinating part of Asia!

There is a very old, silent movie called "Chang" that was made near Change Mai, in the jungle. Very cute movie. Find and watch!! I had it, years ago, on VHS tape.

How to Develop Photos on Stone in a Darkroom

I have always loved the idea of seeing my photos on stone and other natural materials. So, a few months ago, I began googling how it could be done. This is how I discovered (and fell in love with) liquid emulsion. Liquid emulsion is photographic emulsion which you can melt down and paint on any surface. You can then expose an image and develop it using traditional darkroom chemicals. In this article, I would like to explain the process a little, so that if you are also interested in giving this fun process a go, you can!

Cinematographer Michal Dabal on the Petzval Lens

Here’s what happens before we interview a photographer. We gush about the work though we have yet to find out the cameras and processes behind the brilliant composition or the light architecture. And even when they haven’t used a Lomo camera, we feature them anyway. But every once in a while comes a pro who uses one of our premium lenses at work and our fun cameras off-duty. This makes us mighty glad, more so when their images are good and worth sharing. We count cinematographer Michal Dabal's work among them.
