Why is this your Weapon of Choice?
I love medium format. I have all these medium format cameras, including a Yashica Mat 124G and a Mamiya C330. At one point or another, those two were my weapons of choice. But, I recently acquired a Kiev 60, which came all the way from Europe, and it has been my favorite ever since! Although it’s bulky and heavy, it is still easy to use since I can operate most of the controls with just my right hand. Plus, the depth of field of it is just amazing!
Any memorable experiences you’ve had while using this Weapon of Choice?
The camera is fairly new to me so I haven’t really made any memories with it. One anecdote I can share though is this:
Usually, when you use certain films with the Kiev 60, there are overlapping frames because it is built for films with thicker paper backing. There’s a permanent fix for it, which I tried to do except I could never figure out how to do this one step. So instead, I looked for a temporary fix, which I found, but now I have at least 10 empty spools with several layers of tape on each of them.
People would probably find that weird and complicated but since I develop my own films, it’s easier than it sounds because I can just recycle those spools.
Would you recommend this to other Lomographers? If yes, to whom do you have in mind?
Oh, the Kiev 60 definitely comes with my highest recommendation! It is great and it is also built like a tank! I would recommend it to my fellow medium format lovers who just can’t quite afford a Hasselblad just yet.
When using this, what are you favourite subjects to photograph and why?
Portraits! Always portraits! Just because I love shooting portraits.
