While leisurely roaming around a local bookstore yesterday, something cute, quirky, and strangely familiar caught my eye: it was The Meowmorphosis, the latest addition to the mashup novels published by Quirk Books. Called Quirk Classics, the collection now has six books:

  • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2009) by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
  • Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters (2009) by Jane Austen and Ben Winters
  • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls (2010) by Steve Hockensmith
  • Android Karenina (2010) by Leo Tolstoy and Ben Winters
  • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dreadfully Ever After (2011) by Steve Hockensmith
  • The Meowmorphosis (2011) by Franz Kafka and Coleridge Cook

As you can probably tell, the aptly named collection plays around with all sorts of fantasy elements and combines them with the classics we bibliophiles have known and loved. I’ve heard about the first two installments around the time they were released in 2009, and loved the idea — and the oh so very pun-ny titles, of course! Zombies with Austen’s heroines, robots with Tolstoy’s lovers, and a fuzzy feline instead of a cringe-worthy cockroach for Kafka’s classic. How can you not love all of those?

While I adore Jane Austen and the quirky mashups, I think The Meowmorphosis, the feline-themed rendition of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, will be my hands-down favorite (I know I’m being biased as a cat lover!). What about you, my fellow bibliophiles? Have you read any of these quirky mashup novels? Let me know what you think!
