Monday Moodboard: Ornate Artwork Made Using Donated Earrings

How many times have I lost one of my earrings? I think I’ve lost count; but maybe I should count the ways I can make use of them instead!

After visiting Junk Culture and Makezine and learning about an artwork aptly called “The Chandelier of Lost Earrings” made by Lauren Sagar and Sharon Campbell, I could only hope that I found out about it sooner and sent them my “orphan earrings.” That’s because the pretty and ornate artwork assembled by the two architectural glass artists was actually made using more or 3,500 earrings donated by people who lost the other half of the original pair.

Sagar and Campbell created their eye-catching and ornate masterpiece on the grounds of St. Mary’s Maternity Hospital in Manchester, supported by Arts Council England. “This project has emerged from our long-term engagement with the staff at St Mary’s Maternity Hospital. We wish to dedicate it to them, to the mothers who have delivered at the hospital and to everyone who has cared for them,” the artists mentioned in their website.

Looking at the beautiful and elaborate sculpture that measures 2.5 meters high and 1 meter wide, I am also reminded of the amazing recreations of famous portraits using various found objects by Jane Perkins. One can’t help but be amazed at how some random bits and baubles could form something totally different yet amazingly brilliant, don’t you think?

Now, maybe I should start gathering those earrings and other random baubles and stuff, and think of ways I can breathe new life to them instead of leaving them to rot somewhere.
