Caffeinated Haunts: Yardstick Coffee

More than just a coffee shop, this fresh and cozy corner in Makati City has become one of my favorite spaces to get my regular dose of caffeine.

When I first visited Yardstick Coffee in Legazpi Village, Makati City, I immediately realized that it’s not like the other coffee shops that are scattered around the business district. Aside from its pleasantly minimalist space (inspired by Scandinavian colors and Japanese lines, so I’ve heard), and simple menu, what caught my attention right away was The Y.A.R.D. corner, which showed a list of workshops and courses that coffee enthusiasts like me can take. This spot is certainly not your regular cup of joe!

Since Yardstick opened its doors to coffee lovers and entrepreneurs in November 2013, the space has been steadily gaining raves from all over Metro Manila. Students, professionals, creative minds — you name it, they most likely have heard about it by now, and have been there at least once.

It’s easy to see what’s been drawing people to this unique coffee space. They don’t only serve delicious coffee, tea, and pastries — they’re also a one-stop shop for all your cafe supply needs. Looking for the right machines and coffee-making tools for your dream cafe or coffee station at home? Yardstick is Metro Manila’s official distributor of La Marzocco espresso machines and grinders, as well as Rocket Espresso commercial and domestic machines.

Yardstick currently offers three espresso blends, each with its own distinct flavor and components. There’s Legazpi with a bitter-sweet cacao flavor and creamy body; Paradigm with a fruity sweetness, juicy mouthfeel, and citrus aftertaste; and Project Y with a grapefruit tartness, crisp texture, and winey finish. The shop is set to churn out freshly roasted coffee for retail and wholesale early this year, something which I’m sure my fellow coffee lovers are looking forward to.

Then, there’s The Yardstick Academy of Resource & Development or simply The Y.A.R.D., whose focus is on specialty coffee and offers courses and workshops for those who want to venture into the coffee-making business, as well as home coffee enthusiasts. It’s definitely on my bucket list to take their courses for Tasting Specialty Coffee and Brewing Coffee at Home!

Yardstick is owned and run by Singapore Management University alumni Kevin Tang, Jessica Lee, and Andre Chanco, coffee lovers and experts who began their business as a mobile coffee bar last year. With some help from a barista or two, they personally oversee and handle all the coffee-making processes and shop-keeping, something which I’m sure all their customers appreciate.

Since Yardstick is just a stone’s throw away from the office, it has been my (and the Lomography Magazine Team’s as well) go-to place for meetings, brainstorming activities, or simply a quiet respite. It’s simple, never noisy and crowded, roomy, and serves great coffee — a perfect caffeinated spot to get those brain cells working and creative juices flowing, if you ask me!
