Most Romantic Places in the World: Venice and Its Gondolas

2014-02-09

In this article, I’ll show you some photos taken last summer in Venice, all in black and white, and dedicated to one of its most important and most romantic symbols: Gondolas. For the incoming Valentine’s Day, why don’t you ride a gondola with your partner? Look at these pictures and then get on your trip to Venice!

The gondola is the most romantic symbol of a timeless city, Venice. Celebrated by many important artists like the musician and composer Franz Liszt (in its piano piece La Lugubre Gondola, the famous writer Tomas Mann (Death in Venice), and the great playwright William Shakespeare (The Merchant of Venice), it has also become one of the most photographed subjects in the city.

At the peak of the tourist season, the Grand Canal in Venice is busy with an incredible parade of gondolas!

The gondola is an incredible piece of artwork. It’s built entirely by hand, and requires eight different kinds of wood and months of work. Each boat is a unique piece of work in itself, and every carpenter has his own professional secrets!

The gondola is 10.85 meters long, with width varying from 1.38 to 1.42 meters; its weight is about 350 kilograms and is composed of approximately 280 pieces of wood.

Watching closely, you can see that the gondola has a slightly asymmetrical shape, to better enable the gondolier (who rows with a single oar standing up) to maneuver it.

While they are rowing, the gondoliers enliven the tourists by singing Italian and Venetian songs.

A gondola ride through the narrow canals of Venice is a unique romantic experience, and the city offers indescribable glimpses of art! The total absence of cars makes this city magical and timeless!

So, what are you waiting for? Treat yourself and your partner to a gondola ride for Valentine’s Day!
