In the Shop: Park Life

Interview with Derek Song of Park Life in San Francisco, CA.

In 2006, Jamie Alexander & Derek Song, opened Park Life in a small town called San Francisco, California. They describe is as “a labor of love for all things art related.” Mix one part gallery and one part design boutique: shake to perfection… and you get the store that has everything your arty heart could desire.
Limited edition prints and books, apparel, jewelry, imported magazines, and of course, your favorite Lomography goodies, are all present in this shop. This place is a true destination for SF locals and tourists alike. We caught up with one half of the dynamic duo, Derek Song.

How did Park Life begin?
We began when I was looking for an investor for a book I was doing with the artist Andrew Schoultz. The project morphed into the idea to open a gallery and that idea led to the shop.

Describe SF in three words:
Drunkard, creative, home

Favorite Bay Area Photographer?
Sean Mcfarland, because he’s both a craftsmans and has great concepts. Plus, he is a great guy.

What is one secret about SF that nobody knows?
That the city is actually really small geographically.

Latest Inspiration?
Tibor Kalman, always. And the super talented friends we have.

Favorite place to eat in SF? And best dish there?
Oyagi – Monk Fish Liver.

If you were a Lomography Camera, which would you be and why?
Hmmmm, I guess the Holga. Because it’s not perfect but it’s really fun to use.

Best venue in the Bay Area to catch a live show?
Hands down, the Great American Music Hall. The venue is beautiful and it’s just the right size to feel like your part of the show.

When it comes to film, what’s your preference?
I guess I would say color. Just cause b&w can make almost anything look good. Color is a bit trickier. No preference for film.

Favorite time of year in SF?
Late fall, September to October. Because it’s actually warm in the city.

You’re on assignment to shoot the location of your choice, anywhere in the world – where would you pick?
I just saw some pics of the small island off the coast of Scotland in a past issue of National Geographic. It looks like some made up Hollywood set. So weird and beautiful.

Do you have a specific type of photography that you prefer?
I do like portraiture. It’s so intimate and revealing. But, I also like the fashion shots for Purple Magazine. Whoever their art director is, they know what they are doing.

Derek’s Advice of the Day:
Try your best not to follow trends. It’s an easy way out, but if you dig a bit deeper there is so much cool and inspirational stuff out there.

Here’s just a sampling of what you can expect for your next visit to Park Life:
