Big TV, the third White Lies album, is the music album I listened to the most this year. So, when they came to Vienna, I just had to go see them.
White Lies is an indie rock band from UK. Some would also call their music pop-punk or pop-rock, depends on who you’re asking. Their music is really dramatic and dark, but at the same time really uplifting and optimistic. If you haven’t heard any of their music yet, do it and maybe you’ll like what you’ll hear.
I’ve been a fan of White Lies since I first heard their single Death. To this day it remains one of my favorite songs ever. It’s so uplifting it makes me feel good in a second when I’m feeling down. Well, I like their debut album a lot. It happens a lot, that rock bands try to complicate things too much, but White Lies keep it simple, their songs are really melodic and stick in your head for a long time.
I’ve already been on their concert once. They were in Ljubljana, Slovenia a couple of years ago, right after their debut came out. Their concert was good; lead singer Harry really has an amazing voice and he sounds just like on a record, but you could see at that time they weren’t exactly confident. Harry barely spoke to the audience, he lacked that skill, he just stood there like a tree. Don’t get me wrong, they were still great, after all I came for the music, but I like to see a band having fun doing what they love the most — playing music.
So, when I came to Vienna last week I didn’t really know what to expect. They are a couple years older, they have three albums out so I guessed they must have learnt something. And they did. They were simply amazing. It was so much fun, me and my friends were dancing the whole concert long. Harry had a lot of contact with audience, he was smiling a lot and seemed happy. And he is a really good singer. But I never doubted that.
