Snippets and Vignettes: A Day at Home by Charlotte Colbert

I’m still on the surrealist side of things and the exploration has been interesting. Surely, Dali and other members from the surrealist team had reasons why they used this vision and approach to their art. And so I continue my exploration, with yet another artist.

A play of words is one thing while the play of ideas is another. Enter Charlotte Colbert’s series A Day at Home and see the “imagined and the real within the context of the home.” The photographer’s vision of the surreal peers through the would-be eyes of a derelict home as it looks inward to see its tenant.

Housewife is a funny play of word in this case. Literally, one of the figures pictured in the series has a house for a head in a surrealist dream scenario. It’s a playful take on the imagined roles within the home and is paired up with other scenes that may find home in a psychological thriller or novel.

Charlotte Colbert delivered her series from inside a dilapidated house in London’s East End using a medium-format film camera. Her series will be on display at the Gazelli Art House in London from November 29 to December 20, 2013.
