Alex Hall’s ‘Relativity’

Stepping into the so-called “real world” can be overwhelming, especially when you’re young and inexperienced. Surely most, if not all, of us have been in that position. Young artist Alex Hall creatively depicts such feelings spot-on in his latest work comprised of surreal oil paintings, which you just might find yourself relating to.

25-year old Nashville-based artist Alex Hall draws from personal experience and created a set of paintings called “Relativity.” Hall wrote in his artist statement that his artwork, “was a visual representation of an emotion that has been universally felt by all people: a sense of uncertainty, and ultimately struggling to achieve a balance in life.”

Hall described “Relativity” as “a very honest representation of where I am currently in my own life,” citing feeling “extremely overwhelmed” the moment he was “thrown off [his] feet into the real world” right after graduating from college. Moreover, it may be observed that the individuals in the paintings “floating in time and space” are faceless. This was a deliberate move by Hall, an attempt to make them “relate” to every person.

“…I was extremely overwhelmed. I still was not sure what path to take or which way to go in life. I began to realize that most people are familiar with this feeling of uncertainty,” Hall wrote.
