Mechanical Pinhole Cameras With an Analogue Heart by Kwanghun Hyun

Analogue love comes in many ways. Lately, we’ve featured some pinhole camera stories in our articles that just reinforce the idea of analogue love. But photographer and artisan Kwanghun Hyun just takes it to an entirely different level with his mechanical clockwork pinhole cameras.

Lovingly named “Hearbeat” by its Korean designer Kwanghun Hyun, the two masterfully done mechanical pinhole cameras will just tug at the heart strings of any photography lover. Yanking at those same strings, the Heartbeat cameras made by Hyun feature ingenious design and functionality in terms of clockwork movements and camera making.

The seemingly simple pinhole camera was upgraded by Hyun to take photographs with the impressively detailed watch movement of a modified Unitas 6497. Both cameras make use of precise watch movements to shoot pinhole photographs in amazing fashion.

All bits and pieces of the camera were machined by Hyun himself, starting from the knobs, plates up to the case of the camera. Precise watch movements meet photographic simplicity in this camera born of analogue love and clockwork ingenuity.

Heartbeats 1 and 2 offer not just dashing looks but also good quality pinhole photographs. The vignettes are distinct and the effects of the pictures are soft and dreamy. The photographs from the Heartbeat cameras is in contrast to the rigidly mechanical exterior that can only solicit “Oohs” and “Aahs” from onlookers.
