Wanderlust: Road Trippin'

I keep on hearing from people that I have my head in the clouds. Every time I come from a trip somewhere, I’m already thinking about a new adventure. I can’t help myself. It’s not that I don’t like it at home, it’s just that there’s so much to see and yet so little time. I have this little voice in my head that’s constantly saying, “Come on, go outside, explore, have an adventure.” Do you know what I’m talking about?

But how can one have the best adventure? Well, I’m happy you asked because I have the perfect answer. Road trip, yeaaah!

A car helps, but you don’t actually need it. You can go on your bike, your longboard, your rollerblades, or even by foot. You can go by yourself or with your best friends. All you need is a road, a path, a way before you and hey, there you go.

You can go really far or you can just explore your surroundings. This September, I went to Portugal with my best friends where we rented a car and had the best time. We try to do that a lot. But we don’t go to a distant country all the time. We do it close to our home also because even if you think you know your country so well, there are always still some little secret places waiting to be discovered. We go to the Slovenian seaside sometimes, other times we explore the Slovenian hillside – there’s just no stopping us. But our favorite thing is going to concerts (we prefer going to our neighboring countries like Italy, Austria, and Croatia). We leave with our car in the morning and just go. We have a whole day before us until the concert happens in the evening.

The best thing about a road trip is that you can stop by wherever you want. If there’s something interesting that you see, you just hit the brakes and there you go. One of my favorite road trip memories is from a trip two years ago, where we went to pick up a friend who was studying in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. I’m from Slovenia – that’s like more than 1,000 kilometers, but no biggie. So, yeah, we needed like two days to go there because we basically stopped at every European city where we knew someone. But the best part happened when we were driving home and were just past the Czech-Austrian border, somewhere around St. Polten. We passed some green fields when a friend looked at me and said, “Was that what I thought it was? Like a field full of weed?” (Mind you, she just came from the Netherlands). And I said, “Well, yeah, it totally was. We should take some photos.” But we already passed it. But then there was a field full of sunflowers. And it was sunset, too. So we stopped, and it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I took some photos (though not analogue ones) but they could never show how beautiful it really was. It’s moments like this that make it worth it. And spending time with people you love the most, of course.
