Lomographers Around the World: Lisbon with Saidseni

What would be better than having a local friend as a travel guide to get to know a city? Today, saidseni shares with us the best tips ever so that we can make the most of our next visit to Lisbon.

We don’t want to sound hackneyed, but the most tourist-y must-do in Lisbon would be…?

A ride tram #28 along the narrow streets of old Lisbon! There is no better way to get to know the city.

After this, which museum, gallery or cultural center should we visit?

Centro Cultural de Belém, where there are exhibitions, concerts, workshops, flea markets, art shops… I’m sure you’ll find something of your taste!

In which area/neighborhood/street can we enjoy a lovely lomo walk?

Bairro da Mouraria, possibly the birth place of Fado. The neighborhood changed a lot in the past years, moving away from it’s drugs and social exclusion tradition. Lots of nice cultural and social initiatives are being held by the population of Mouraria, a mixed group of both Lisbon folks and immigrants from around the world.

We love food tourism! We can’t leave without having tried which food, and where?

Of course, pastéis de nata (egg custard tart)! You can find them everywhere in town but if you are looking for the real deal, you must try Pastéis de Belém, next to the Jerónimos monastery.

If we get on the party mood, where should we go?

It is not about where, but when. If you want a real party in Lisbon, you must visit us in June, when the popular Santo António’s festivities are held. In the decorated streets of the old part of town there is music, food, drinks and people in every corner, throughout the entire month.

Any souvenir worth putting in the suitcase?

Sardines! You can’t leave Lisbon without a sardine in your bag! In the last years, it became a symbol of the city. They are everywhere, in all materials (edible or not) and colors. There is a sardine for every taste and even a vegetarian like me can appreciate them: chocolate sardines, sardine-shaped cookies, you name it!

Your favorite spot in Lisbon is…

For many years, the old part of town used to be my favorite. But nowadays, one of my favorite place is Parque das Nações, the former location of the World Expo 1998. Along the river side, Expo, as we call the area, is probably the only modern place in the city I enjoy. The architecture, with the ocean as the theme, is great as a whole and the materials reflect the unique Lisbon light in a very special way.

Which photo do we have to take to be able to say we’ve been to Lisbon?

Lisbon is full of photo opportunities but I choose Cais das Colunas. Nobody leaves Lisbon without a picture of it, I think. Don’t forget you must have a seagull on top of one of the columns in your picture!

Thanks a lot to saidseni! We are looking forward to visiting Lisbon soon!

Caleb Savage: Into the Darkroom, Out in the Open

When asked to recall the moment they first became truly interested in photography, most photographers would remember the magical feeling of picking up a hand-me-down or secondhand camera, the thrill of shooting an entire roll through, and the elation upon seeing and holding their first ever set of photographs. Caleb Savage, however, had quite a unique experience. At 10 years old, he had his first taste of working in the darkroom making prints at Boy Scout camp, thereby beginning a more than a decade-long affinity with photography.

Explore Osaka with Yamanaka Yuko's AM Renault

As a core member of Yamanaka Yuko, a local hiking group based in Hong Kong, AM Renault is deeply in love with nature. He is also part of the creative photography group Six Dimen Boy and is good at intertwining photography with art and design elements -- making photos not only useful for documenting what we see, but also as a means to tickle the imagination. The young and talented AM tried out the New Russar+ lens while traveling in Japan with his father. He talks about his experience and shares the sights from his journey in this Lomography Magazine exclusive.
