Hanging Loose at Amado Beach in Carrapateira, Portugal

Spending your whole summer in the South of Portugal working in a surf camp? The summer of 2013 could have been much worse. I had some of the best months of my life hanging loose at Praia do Amado in Carrapateira, one of the most breathtaking beaches of the Algarve and well known for its excellent waves.

Carrapateira is a miniscule and picturesque village at the South West coast of Portugal’s Algarve region. It pretty much breathes surfing and everything related to it. It counts several surf schools and camps, but I stayed at Amado Surfcamp which is located in a valley far away from the civilized world. After a trip on a jungle-sque road, you get the amazing view on the valley as a reward.

After our daily tasks like cleaning bathrooms, making breakfast, washing dishes and taking all the guests to Amado Beach, we are free to check out the waves ourselves. Praia do Amado is a popular beach among surfers in Portugal, as it has perfect waves for beginners as well as advanced surfers. A nice bonus is that while surfing, you are offered an overwhelming view on the limestone cliffs surrounding the beach.

Right next to Amado Beach is the equally stunning Bordeira Beach, situated at the mouth of Ribeira da Bordeira and consisting of three glorious kilometers of uninterrupted sand. Surprisingly enough, you will often find the beach completely deserted. However, it frequently offers good waves to its visitors.

But, probably the best about working in a surf camp in beautiful Portugal is having the privilege of meeting awesome and easy-going beach bums literally all the time, not to mention the super relaxed beach dogs hanging out at the surf school as well.
