Elliot Erwitt Releases First Book of Color Photos

Renowned advertising and documentary photographer Elliot Erwitt of the prestigious Magnum photo agency, who’s known for his black and white candid snapshots of everyday moments, has recently unveiled a book of his color photographs collated throughout his career.

The book, titled “Elliot Erwitt’s Kolor,” was released by teNeus and includes more than 400 colored photos taken between the ‘50s and the early ‘90s. The photos not only feature iconic personalities like Marilyn Monroe, Akira Kurosawa, and Alfred Hitchcock, but also random snapshots of daily life in France, the US, Poland, and Australia, among other places.

1) A photo of Marilyn Monroe taken in 1954 at the set of her movie, ‘The Seven Year Itch’; 2) Alfred Hitchcock and Vera Miles in New York, 1957; 3) Akira Kurosawa in Tokyo, 1989; 4) A photo taken in Australia in 1961; 5) A photo taken in Provence, France in 1959. All photos by Elliott Erwitt, Magnum, and teNeues via The New Yorker.

The word color in the title was said to have been spelled with a “k” as Erwitt’s tribute to George Eastman of the Kodak Company, who was to have a soft spot for words beginning in that letter. As stated in the description for the book on teNeues, the photos were selected by Erwitt among his archive of nearly half a million 35 mm slides. All the photos in “Kolor” are said to "have never been published in a book before.”
