It’s unusual for someone to hail an instant camera as their favourite especially when there are too many great film cameras to choose, try, and fall in love with!
But lostlittlekid or Kam Tom Yip from Manchester swears his love for the Fuji Instax Mini 7s because aside from the amazing portraits it can produce, its bulky yet simple design also catches his eye (and heart!)
And definitely, it’s his Weapon of Choice! Read on our interview with him and see the quirky Instax shots he has shared with us! Who knows, it may be your next favourite camera, too!

Weapon of Choice: Fuji Instax Mini 7s
Why is this camera/film your Weapon of Choice?
Like most instant cameras, the Fuji Instax Mini 7s is big and bulky. Out of the Fuji Instax range it’s probably one of the oldest so controls are sparse and limited. (I know what you’re thinking, I’m not really selling this camera because in fact these are its charms.) It’s strange looking design will get people interested which results to much more photo opportunities. The lack of controls means you’re not focusing on settings but on the subject so “capturing the moment” is easier. I can’t begin to tell you how much fun I’ve had with this camera — just clowning around plus seeing the look on people’s faces when they watch the images appear — priceless!
Any memorable experiences you’ve had while using this Weapon of Choice?
I guess my very first shot was significant to me. I’ve had the camera for days but didn’t use it as I really wanted something "good” or at least important to shoot. I remember getting so frustrated with myself because I couldn’t decide that I ended up holding the camera in front of my face and hitting the shutter while severely dazing myself with the flash in the process. Up until that point I didn’t know what to expect as I hadn’t seen an instant picture develop before. Slowly seeing my face, albeit a stupid one, appear in the palm of my hands was something truly special.
Would you recommend this to other Lomographers? If yes, to whom do you have in mind?
I’d recommend this camera to anyone, not just Lomographers. It’s amazingly simple to use and you get great results with very little effort. In terms of instant photography, shooting [with the] Instax Mini is the cheapest and most accesible, too.
What are you favourite subjects to photograph and why?
It’s a great camera for portraits, so I tend to shoot those. I always use it when I travel as I feel it’s a more unique way of remembering my experiences and the people I meet. Getting them to sign and personalise the final prints make things much more specia, too. Now that I’m back home more often, I find myself experimenting with self-portraits. My masked man shots were very well received by the Community but their popularity always surprised me as I was just fooling around and wasn’t even going to upload them at the first place.
