Today in History: the first Cannes Film Festival was held

The prestigious Cannes Film Festival turns 67 today!

Participating in the Cannes Film Festival seem to be always part of the many wishes of filmmakers out there who are trying to show the world the power of creativity and human imagination. The beginning of the Festival may have not come easy but proved to be fruitful as it grows to be one of the most sought after honors in film making.

The first Cannes Film Festival was held at a beach city of the same name back in 1946 after the Second World War officially came to a stop. Only 18 nations participated in the event, a far cry from the attendance the Festival is now producing yearly.

Filmmaking has proliferated with the Festival’s introduction. The Festival had been home to more than a handful film greats such as the first ever Palm d’ or winner Marty, directed by Delbert Mann in 1955; and Apocalypse Now, directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979. All proved to be great inspiration for the further advancing of the industry.

Its annual event unifies different communities into one – taking time to appreciate, cultivate and enrich the art of making film. Indeed, the Cannes Film Festival has changed the way we look at film and the artistic process and heart that is poured into it.
