Pirate or lubber, here’s your chance to slur your words together and drink up the grog in celebration of International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
We’ve been celebrating this parodic holiday well over a decade now, have you ever wondered how it found a place in non-pirate culture?
The idea came about when two guys named John Baur and Mark Summers from Albany, Oregon were playing racquetball and one of them shouted “Aaarrr” in reaction to a surge of physical pain. This incident actually happened on June 6 but since D-Day is observed on the same day, they chose Summers’ ex-wife’s birthday, September 19, for easy reference.
In 2002, they sent a letter regarding their invented holiday to humor columnist Dave Barry, who promoted it on his column. Summers and Baur’s Pirate Day celebration garnered further media exposure and before long was being celebrated internationally.
Take a look at these lads and lassies for some ’spiration, an’ start celebratin’.
So what are ye waiting for, mateys? It’s time to don your eye patch, tie that bandanna and say, “Ahoy!”
