Sankt Gallen is a city located in the North-East of Switzerland, between the lake of Costance and the Appenzell Alps. It is famous for its abbey, an UNESCO World Heritage site. Read more!

After my previous article about the red colors of the city of Basel here I present to you the wonderful city of Sankt Gallen, with its white walls and its Abbey, an UNESCO World Heritage monument.

In the first two photos you can see some typical houses in the historic center of the city. The dominant color is white, and many houses are typically built with a wooden framework.

Sankt Gallen has a population of 160000 inhabitants and represents one of the most important cities in the North East of the Switzerland.

The Abbey is a Roman Catholic religious complex. Around 613 an Irish monk named Gallus, established a hermitage on the site of the present Abbey. Inside the museum you can find many relics, including his skull.

The first building was present from the 8th century. From 13th century this complex became independent and it was one of the most important Benedictine abbeys in Europe: its medieval library is one of the most important in the world.

Between 1755 and 1768 there was an attempt to expand the Abbey, with the demolition of most of the medieval structure. The building, including the Cathedral, was rebuilt in the late Baroque style, as you can see in these photos

The interior of the Cathedral is considered one of the most important baroque buildings in Switzerland

All these photos were taken with my trusty Praktica camera. A city that worth a visit! You can easily reach Sankt Gallen from the Austrian border (from Lustenau you can drive to Rorschach and then to Sankt Gallen) or from Zurich (passing from Winterthur and Wil)
