There is no better place for me to spend the hot summer days than near the ocean, and Fonte da Telha beach is the perfect place for a short escape from Lisbon’s hot streets, just across the River Tejo.
Fonte da Telha beach is part of the Portuguese coast, situated on the south side of the River Tejo. It’s one of those places that drive most beach lovers insane and make this country such a great place to live in.
If you are in Lisbon, it is the place to get away with your friends in the hot summer days. Just crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge to the south side of the river, leaving the hot city behind you, gives a sensation of joy and freedom!
You can get to Fonte da Telha by public transportation and there is a cute little train that makes the trip from Costa da Caparica (also very popular) to Fonte da Telha, but I have to say car may be the best option here. You have to take an extra 10 minutes ride after Costa da Caparica beaches and I think it is worth it. Once you get to the beach, you’ll be amazed by the immense white sand beach and the beautiful blue ocean!
The sea is mostly calm but it has its rough days. The weather is great in this part of the country during the summer and this is just the perfect place to have some fun with your friends on a hot, lazy holiday!
Fonte da Telha is also a fishermen village where traditional forms of fishing are still used. It is also a popular location for second habitation, where you can rent a house for the summer. Many houses, though, have been demolished because they were placed in the “arriba fóssil”, the protected fossil scarps area, characteristic of the region. There are still some houses in the scarps, it’s quite impressing. It’s kind of obvious there is not proper planning going on here, but it gives an extra charm to the place.
If you are a beach lover or just looking for a little pause from the hot summer temperatures, be sure not to miss this charming location!
