LomoAmigo: Illustrator Sedat Girgin

Our LomoAmigo, illustrator Sedat Girgin, shot with the La Sardina DIY. With a crazy streak he placed it in a plastic bag and submerged it underwater. Read on for an interview with the Turkish illustrator.

Name: Sedat Girgin
Country: Turkey
Job: Illustrator
Website: www.sedatgirgin.com

Tell us about yourself.

28 years old, an illustrator. I illustrated nearly 60 children’s books. I work freelance for magazines and agencies. Also I have a music band for which I play drums. The name is Eskiz.

Did you ever use an analogue camera before?

I practiced drawing in Fine Arts High School. At that time, we had photography classes. I was obsessed with black and white photography. In fact, I built a small dark room at home and I was furiously washing and printing films. My first analogue camera was a Zenit and then, with my first university scholarship, I bought a Nikon FE that’s as old as I am. I often use it. I love analogue cameras.

Do you have any other analogue stuff, like notebooks and records?

I have a planner and pencils. The drums that I play also have a sense of analogue.

Define the La Sardina in five words.

Simple, Pure, Fast, Creative and Surprising.

Which photo of yours do you like most?

The frame that I took Elif at edge of a cliff. That moment was beautiful.

Where did the idea of using the La Sardina underwater come from and how did you manage that?

I got into pool to feel refreshed. I wanted to take pictures underwater. I went and got a locked plastic bag. I taped it and jumped into the pool.

What would you say about your La Sardina DIY design? Does it have a name?

The name is Stuck. A story of a man who’s stuck in a camera. Bored and wants to walk around and look around.

Do you have new projects?

We are preparing a series of books including 9 children’s books. I am trying to manage it.

Are there any public figures whom you’d like to take photos of?

Tom Waits would be nice. And I want to take a picture of Paul McCartney before his death.

Which photographer or artist is your favorite?

There are a lot of illustrators that I like but I can say Ralph Steadman, Ronald Searle, Quentin Blake. I used to look at Eugene Smith’s photographs.

Where do you want to be and what would you want to be doing right now?

It’s cool like that. I am not a willing person, I suppose.
